In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, without initially provide further details.
Context: Rising Strains and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major developments leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
