The Global Health Body Raises Warning Over Severe Shortage of Obesity Medications

Fewer than one in 10 people eligible to benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy have access to them, warns the WHO as it publishes its inaugural advice on the drugs.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to GLP-1 medication.

Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with holistic and lifelong support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to widespread availability to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing significant weight, notes the organization.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Despite the current most favorable case, the manufacturing of these medications might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The advice encourages governments and firms to expand access, via approaches like licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the core component of a leading brand – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

The injections imitate a body's own hormone to slow digestion, reduce hunger and boost feelings of fullness so individuals eat less.

People commonly begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Evidence indicates people may see weight return after a year of stopping the treatment, when their normal hunger come back.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your likelihood for contracting medical conditions, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight impacts individuals in every country and was responsible for 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
